Dark Skin Spots

Beautiful Woman with Charming Smile Age, sun exposure, injury, and many other factors can affect the skin’s coloring. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is excess pigment, which can manifest as small dark spots, large patches, or overall blotchiness. Our Fort Lauderdale office offers a variety of options for improving these conditions. Dr. Andrew begins with an evaluation to determine the cause of the problem and the best treatment plan.

UV damage

Solar lentigo (also called age spots, sun spots, or liver spots) are small dark spots caused by UV radiation. The damage from it accumulates over time, making pigmentation problems more likely with age. This condition is most common in light skinned individuals.

Melasma

This form of hyperpigmentation usually appears on sun exposed areas of skin. It may be triggered by hormones, and is often seen in pregnant women. Melasma is sometimes called the pregnancy mask.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) is most common in people with darker skin. Skin inflammation triggers an increase in pigment production. This usually happens after an acne outbreak, but it can also result from a burn, insect bite, injury, or other skin trauma.

Treating dark spots

Dr. Andrew recommends the best treatment depending on the type of pigmentation, the severity of the problem, your skin type, and other factors. His recommendations may include one or more of the following:

  • Topical formulas containing retinol, hydroquinone, or other therapeutic ingredients
  • IPL (intense pulsed light), fractionated laser therapy, or other light based treatments
  • Mild chemical peels, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid
  • Gentle skin resurfacing and rejuvenation techniques such as microdermabrasion
  • Sun protection is an important adjunct to any treatment. Be sure to choose a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF rating of 30 or higher.
